How to Add Investors as Payees and Send Quarterly Distributions
On this page
Every quarter a sponsor may pay dozens of investors from the deal account. The slow, error-prone part is the payee list. This post shows how to build it once, how Mercury and Ramp each handle recipients, and how to keep a clean record. Provider facts are from their own pages, read November 3, 2026.
Build the payee list once
- Start from the investor list. Your cap table or investor portal already has each legal name and the amount owed. Use the name on the subscription documents.
- Ask each investor for their payout details once, in a form they fill in themselves, not by email text. Prefill what you can and ask only to confirm.
- Match names to accounts. The payee name should match the investor, or the entity that invested, such as a trust or retirement account.
- Store details in one place with limited access. Never forward bank details in chat.
In Mercury
Mercury's developer documentation describes a recipient as a saved payee that can hold bank details for one or more payment methods. You can create recipients yourself or send an invite so the recipient enters their own details; Mercury says the invite keeps sensitive data protected and reduces the risk of manual-entry errors. A payment waits for approval in the dashboard if your rules require it. Mercury also guards against sending the same recipient, account, amount and method twice within 24 hours on its direct API path. Mercury says sending ACH is free through the dashboard.
In Ramp
Ramp's support pages say a vendor can enter its own payment details in the Ramp Vendor Portal, and its ACH direct deposit option supports U.S.-based bank accounts only. Ramp Bill Pay can also request ACH details from a vendor directly. Investors are not vendors in the accounting sense, so many sponsors send investor distributions through DoorKeeping's ACH payments or a payout file that DoorRaise prepares and you upload to Ramp. Ask Ramp support whether paying individuals as vendors fits your use before you rely on it.
Send the quarterly run
- Confirm distributable cash after expenses, loan payment, fees and reserves. See quarterly vs monthly distributions.
- Prepare one line per investor: name, amount, method.
- Have a second person approve. See two-person approval.
- Send ACH first; use a wire only when a date is tight. See ACH vs wire for payouts.
- Save the payment record and send a notice. Distributions are never guaranteed.
Keep records for the K-1
Your CPA needs the date and amount paid to each investor. Match the payment record to the capital account on the K-1. See capital account statements.
Open the account
Open a Mercury account or apply for Ramp. DoorRaise may earn a referral reward if you sign up through these links: for Mercury, the deal company gets $250 and DoorRaise gets $250 once the account receives $10,000 within 90 days, and Ramp may pay a referral reward. A new deal LLC cannot open Ramp before closing (Ramp needs at least $25,000 in cash), so it opens Mercury first to receive the closing funds and can move to Ramp after closing. DoorRaise suggests Ramp at $25,000 or more on deposit and Mercury under that.
How DoorRaise fits in
DoorRaise helps sponsors raise equity for apartment buildings from their friends and followers under Rule 506(b) or 506(c), and verifies that every investor is accredited. Investors' purchase money goes into escrow at Enterprise Bank & Trust by wire only, and wire instructions appear once escrow is open. The deal's operating account at Mercury or Ramp is a separate account that you open for the LLC and use after closing. Fees: $1,500 to set up (non-refundable), then $5,000 a year from closing (only if the deal closes). See pricing or how it works.

Should investors be added as vendors or recipients?
In Mercury, as recipients. In Ramp, the Vendor Portal is the documented route for payment details; confirm with Ramp support that paying individuals fits your use.
How do I change an investor's bank details safely?
Have the investor submit the change in a form they control, then call a number you already had before approving it.
Can DoorRaise send the payouts for me?
With Mercury, DoorRaise tracks payouts automatically. With Ramp, distributions go through DoorKeeping's ACH payments or a payout file you upload to Ramp.
