The deal account pays the loan, vendors and investors. One compromised login or one mistaken click can move a lot of money. Two-person approval is the simple control that prevents it. This post shows what Mercury and Ramp offer, how to set a threshold and what to write down. Facts come from the providers' own pages, read November 3, 2026.

Why two people

Payment fraud and mistakes share a pattern: one person, one screen, no pause. A second approver adds a pause. For a deal account, that second person is often a co-sponsor, the operations lead or the CPA with approval-only rights.

Mercury

  • Roles. Mercury's FAQ lists admin, bookkeeper, custom and card-only access. Admins can move money, add people and change permissions. Bookkeepers cannot move money or manage users. Custom access can move money unrestricted, not at all, or with admin approval. A separate accountant role gives statements and transactions without starting payments.
  • Dual admin approvals. Mercury's help center says it can require a second admin's sign-off for sensitive actions, including payments above a limit you set for each user. You need two admins on file before you can turn it on. Pending requests reach the other admins by email and appear in the dashboard.
  • Approval rules. Mercury's help center says you can create rules with custom thresholds and stack them for multi-level review. Its articles differ on exactly which roles can be named approvers, so check with Mercury support.

Ramp

  • Bill Pay approvals. Ramp says admins build the policy at Bill Pay settings, then Approvals. Amount-based routing is available to all customers; conditions such as vendor and GL fields require Ramp Plus.
  • Who approves. Steps can go to roles such as any admin, department owner, vendor owner or specific people. Several approvers in one step can be set to require all or any.
  • Separation of duties. Ramp says that when enabled, the person who enters a bill cannot approve it, and approvers cannot edit the total, payment details or vendor.

A simple policy

  1. Under a small amount: one approver (for example, routine vendors on a known list).
  2. Above that amount, any payment to a new payee, any change of bank details and every distribution run: two people.
  3. No one approves their own request.
  4. Review who has access every quarter, after the distribution run.
  5. Write it down and keep it with the operating agreement. Ask your own attorney whether the agreement should say it.

Pick the account

DoorRaise suggests Ramp when a deal keeps $25,000 or more and Mercury under that; the sponsor chooses. Open a Mercury account or apply for Ramp. DoorRaise may earn a referral reward if you sign up through these links: for Mercury, the deal company gets $250 and DoorRaise gets $250 once the account receives $10,000 within 90 days, and Ramp may pay a referral reward. A new deal LLC cannot open Ramp before closing (Ramp needs at least $25,000 in cash), so it opens Mercury first to receive the closing funds and can move to Ramp after closing.

How DoorRaise fits in

DoorRaise helps sponsors raise equity for apartment buildings from their friends and followers under Rule 506(b) or 506(c), and verifies that every investor is accredited. Investors' purchase money goes into escrow at Enterprise Bank & Trust by wire only, and wire instructions appear once escrow is open. The deal's operating account at Mercury or Ramp is a separate account that you open for the LLC and use after closing. Fees: $1,500 to set up (non-refundable), then $5,000 a year from closing (only if the deal closes). See pricing or how it works.
